Legal Ramifications of Student Athletes And Pregnancy

Attorney Isaac Conner provided a well timed seminar to athletic trainers and administrators at the Southeast Athletic Trainers' Association conference on February 29, 2008 outlining the legal ramifications of student athletes and pregnancy.  This  issue has received considerable press lately with reports of female student athletes terminating pregnancies due to the fear of losing their athletic scholarship.  Attorney Conner explained how federal and state laws protect pregnant women and discussed the ramifications for universities violating  these statues.  Conner strongly recommended  that athletic trainers be proactive in advocating to their universities the need to develop guidelines that not only inform student-athletes of all their rights, but what procedure will be  taken from conception until a baby is born.  The NCAA has not  mandated  that universities implement pregnancy guidelines, but it  is an issue under consideration.
